Who we are
Part-time hobby programmers, with around forty years of industry experience between us.
We make 80SHACK in our spare time. Between us we have roughly forty years of professional software experience; this is the project we work on in the evenings, because we want to.
We learned to program when home computers were new and largely undocumented. You tried something, it failed, you adjusted, and eventually it worked and you understood why. That process, working a system out by hand until it makes sense, is what the game is built around.
The 1980s setting is a means, not the message. We are not interested in nostalgia for its own sake, or in a parade of period references. What we want to recreate is the experience of discovery: curiosity, patience, and the satisfaction of figuring out a system on your own.
That is why the game has no tutorial. It expects you to explore, make mistakes, and work things out for yourself.
